Spring is here and there’s actually stuff happening in the area worth getting off the couch for. Here are four family events across the Almaguin Highlands this April โ all free or close to it, and all worth the drive.
Armour Rec Bunny Brunch โ Katrine

The Armour Recreation Department is running a Bunny Brunch on Easter Saturday at the Katrine Community Centre. Pancake breakfast from 9 AM to noon, face painting, and two egg hunts โ one at 10 AM and one at 11 AM. Rain or shine, so dress the kids for the weather.
Almaguin Maple Festival โ Sundridge

Hubbert’s Maple Products is hosting the Almaguin Maple Festival to celebrate the first crop of the season. The Sundridge Lions are running a pancake breakfast on-site, and there’s plenty more to see and do at the farm. Hubbert’s has been producing maple syrup for over 159 years โ if you’ve never visited, this is a solid excuse to finally go.
Perry Fire Station Pancake Breakfast โ Emsdale

The Perry Fire Station is putting on a free pancake breakfast on Easter Saturday morning. Open to everyone, 9 AM to noon. Bring the family and support your local fire station.
Powassan Maple Syrup Festival โ Powassan

The Powassan Maple Syrup Festival is a full day. Vendors line Main Street and Clark Street, with more inside the Curling Club and 250 Clark. Here’s what’s on:
- Pancake Breakfast at the Legion / St. Joseph’s Church โ 7:00 AM to noon, Royal Canadian Legion, 62 King Street. Adults $10, Kids (6โ12) $5, Under 5 free
- Commanda Community Centre Breakfast โ 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM, upstairs at the Sportsplex. Adults $10, Kids (6โ12) $5, Under 5 free
- Opening Ceremonies & Pancake Flipping Contest โ 10:00 AM on Main Street, with Mayor McIsaac officially opening the festival
- Great Canadian Lumberjack Show โ 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Axe throwing, chainsaw carving, wood chopping, cross-cut sawing, and chainsaw races
- Main Stage Music โ 10:45 AM to 3:30 PM on Main Street, plus buskers throughout the grounds
- United Church Maple Baked Bean Lunch โ 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, 462 Main Street. Baked beans, homemade bread, and coleslaw. Adults $12, Elementary $5, Preschoolers free. Eat in or take out
- Sarah Argue & Rock the Arts Puppets โ 10 AM, noon, and 2 PM in the Kidz Zone inside 250 Clark
- Reptile Adventure Camp โ 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM inside 250 Clark
- Sap Boiling & Branding Demo โ all day outside the Sportsplex. Donate to the Food Bank and get a branded souvenir
- OPP, Fire, EMS & Crimestoppers Display โ Clark Street, just west of Main
- Free shuttle โ runs 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM from off-site parking at Evan Hughes Excavating, 118 Hwy 534, to 250 Clark and up to Matthews Maple Sugarbush for a free tour
Parking: Use the free off-site lot and take the shuttle. Downtown fills up fast and the gates at the off-site lot close and lock at 4:00 PM โ make sure your vehicle is out before then.
No pets unless they’re a service dog.
